REST and GraphQL are both ways for software systems to exchange data. The right choice depends on the shape of your resources, the needs of your clients and the skills available to operate the API.
When a REST API is a good fit
REST commonly organises endpoints around resources and uses standard HTTP methods. It is familiar to many teams, works well with HTTP caching and can be straightforward when clients need predictable resource operations.
As an API grows, versioning, consistent errors, pagination and documentation need deliberate design. A clear contract helps web, mobile and partner integrations evolve safely.
When GraphQL may help
GraphQL lets a client request a defined shape of data through a schema. It can suit products with several clients that need different combinations of related data, but it introduces choices around caching, query limits, authorisation and monitoring.
Compare real client requests before deciding. Build a small proof of concept and measure complexity, performance and maintenance for the team that will own it.
- Map the data each client needs
- Include security and operational costs
- Choose the simplest API that meets requirements
